Today's radio show was a real enlightening experience. I have know about the WIC program for some time and thought it was just for women with small kids. While that is still true they also offer nutrition counseling and include pregnant women. This is great because if a woman is pregnant it is the most important time in her life to understand the value of good nutrition for herself and her unborn child. WIC is now offering more ethnic friendly foods like tacos, whole wheat bread, tofu, rice to encourage our diverse clients participation in their programs.

NewsWrap": The Anglican Communion punishes its U.S. branch, the Episcopal Church, for consecrating a second openly-queer Bishop, while Canadian Anglicans again decide not to decide on blessing same-gender couples; Iceland's parliament unanimously passes a marriage equality bill, while Teresa Pires and Helena Paixao become the first same-gender couple to legally wed in Portugal; Malawi's embattled queer couple Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza breaks up, and Monjeza is reportedly now dating a woman; more than 3 million celebrate LGBT Pride in Sao Paulo in what's said to be the world's biggest such event, an estimated 100,000 at Tel Aviv Pride honor the victims of last year's murderous rampage on a youth support group meeting at the city's LGBT Center, while about 3,000 at Athens Pride demand equality; and conservative U.S. House Democrat Ike Skelton of Missouri worries that repealing "Don't Ask Don't Tell" will force parents to discuss the existence of gays and lesbians with their children (written by GREG GORDON, with thanks to REX WOCKNER with BILL KELLEY, and reported this week by JENN MAHONEY and PAM MARSHALL).
There was news this week in the PROPOSITION 8 saga, this time regarding the high profile federal lawsuit testing the constitutionality of CALIFORNIA's anti-marriage equality initiative. According to published reports, it will only be a few weeks after hearing closing arguments on June 16th that presiding Judge Vaughn Walker will issue his ruling in the closely watched trial. The case is ultimately expected to go to the U.S. Supreme Court. When the measure passed in 2008 by a slim margin, Mormons were quick to take credit for its success. During the fight, the Mormon Church media-engine, with mega-million dollar public relations and political consulting firm support, barraged Californians with a suffocating number of misleading television and radio ads and door-to-door campaigns staffed by the Mormon-affiliated National Organization for Marriage. A new documentary, "8: THE MORMON PROPOSITION", investigates the behind the scenes but pivotal role played by the Latter Day Saints in swaying the California electorate - an investigation that recently led the California Fair Political Practices Commission to impose a fine on the Church for campaign finance violations. . . . . . . . . . .
